We are currently planning to extend our Centre space by about 93 sqm to cater for the future needs of our residents including the youths and a possible deployment of a full time staff. Improvements to the existing interaction/ seating area are being considered too. We are also working on a brand new user friendly web portal for our community to replace this Blog. It is our intention to roll out the new website when the RC extension works complete sometime in Mar 2012. Free wireless internet access within our RC premises is also in the pipeline. We sincerely hope that theses improvements will bring us closer and meet our aspirations for a vibrant and caring community.

Car Park Woes

Suggestions/Solutions - The RC has recommended to the Town Council and HDB to make the row of car park lots nearest to Street 22 as well as those nearest to Blk 223 and 224 into season parking lots. Our Adviser, Mr. Inderjit Singh had also directed the Town Council to install a coin-operated water dispensing unit near the rubbish collection centre (next to Street 22) to facilitate car washing by our residents (this was an idea put forward by a resident from Blk 234 during a dialogue session with our Adviser on 2 Apr 11).

Situation - Many residents living at Blk 232 and 233 are facing difficulties in getting car park lots when they return home after 6pm as the car park is usually filled up. This is because the patrons of the nearby seafood restaurants are occupying them. The same problem was faced by residents from Blk 223, 224, 234 and 235 whenever the nearby temples hold their major religious activities. Residents from Blk 225 and 226 have to compete for car park lots with wet market go-ers during the weekends.

We have provided feedbacks to HDB and Town Council. Together with our grassroots' Adviser, the authorities are looking into the matter to see how they can address the issue to better serve our residents. We seek your kind understanding and patience on this matter if you belong to this group of affected residents. In the meantime, please feel free to email us your observations or suggestions. It was a hot afternoon but everyone at the party was happy. They enjoyed playing games, watching NEA educational video show, chatting away with neighbours and munching the "Old Chang Kee" curry puffs at the same time. The kids were excited with the free flow of pop corn and candy floss while busy making noise from their party kits. There were gifts for everyone after the games.

The dialogue with our MP, Mr. Inderjit Singh together with senior grassroots leaders and representatives from some government agencies went on smoothly with many suggestions being brought out by our residents. The RC will follow-up on those suggestions with the relevant authorities as advised and supported by Mr. Inderjit Singh.

We had more than 90% of the eligible residents voted in favour of the HIP for Blk 221,222,223, 225 and 226. This means the project can now go ahead. Congratulations to all!

The Essential Improvement items are fully funded by the Government, while the Optional Improvements chosen by Singapore Citizen Households are heavily subsidised depending on the flat type.

HIP for this precinct will start from the first quarter of 2011 and complete by the first quarter of 2013. During this period, HDB will provide a common air-conditioned study room, rest area, temporary toilets, emergency plumbing and electrical services and an information centre on site to address the concerns of affected residents. Health Screening for Residents Above Age 50

A total of 108 residents above the age of 50 turned up for the health checks on 14 Nov 2010 at our Senior Citizens' Club situated at Blk 231. They were treated to Milo drinks and nutritious Oatmeal biscuits after their health checks. We measured their Body Mass Index (BMI) and took some blood samples for glucose and cholesterol level measurement at the laboratory. The test results were handed to the residents during a healthcare talk on 11 Dec 2010 at our Senior Citizens' clubhouse and light refreshments were served after the talk.

Our Community Garden

Our community garden situated between Blk 231 and 232 is undergoing some improvement works. We had put in place 4 permanent structures for hanging of festive lighting and decorations. We want to make it a nice place for residents to congregate, interact and share their experiences on gardening. Once completed, it would be a beautiful place not only for residents to meet up, but also a nice area for some photo sessions with family and friends.

The garden naming contest had attracted 17 participants by the end of Jan 2011. 3 winners (Ms Jocelia Tay, Mr. Jansen Tay and Mr. Joseph James Louis) were identified and invited to a festive dinner on 19 Feb 2011 to receive their prizes from our advisor, Mr. Inderjit Singh. The date of the official opening of the community garden will be announced in due course.

The party was held at the void deck of Blk 225 from 8 to 9.30pm on 19 Nov 2010. Performances by the children attracted a large enthusiastic crowd and their cameras. With their beautiful costumes, the little kids danced happily with cute expressions on their powdered faces. The crowd was impressed as they managed to pull off such a wonderful performance at such a young age.

Deepavali Celebration

We celebrated the Festival of Lights, Deepavali, on 27 Nov 2010 at the void deck of Blk 223. The area was beautifully decorated with mango leaves and flowers. Great Music, together with our traditional Indian dancers heightened the festive spirit. Special dance items put up by Jingle Land play group left a smile on every face. The lighting up of "Kuthuvilakku" by our Guest of Honour, Mr. Tan Ah Pek, BBM (L), Chairman of Kebun Baru Citizens' Consultative Committee marked the start to that evening's programme. The residents’ turnout was awesome and we were running short of seats. Among them were a few who were wheelchair bound. It touched our hearts to see that they came despite the inconvenience. Thank you. We estimated the crowd to be around 180. Small gifts and refreshments were provided.

Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration On 24 Sep 2010

The event was held at the open concourse between Blk 230 and 231 from 7pm to 9.30pm. Many residents with children in tow joined our Guest of Honour, Mr. Inderjit Singh in this fun filling festive celebration.

The children especially enjoyed watching the magic show performed by Mr. Andy Ng. They never hesitated to volunteer themselves on stage to assist him in his performance. There were lots of cheering and laughter from the audients, adults and children alike.

The residents were also being entertained by other performances such as the Lion/Dragon dance, Ukelele and Guzheng play, Break dance and Myanmar traditional dance.

Competitive games were also played among residents of different races. We found the game played between a few family teams being the most meaningful one. Each team was made up of an adult and a child. They had one of their hand tied to each other. They then required to set-up/light-up the lanterns and complete a short distance race. It was the strong family bonding that brought about the unity and strength to win them the top prizes.

The snow-skin mooncake making demonstration and traditional Chinese tea art appreciation attracted many interest as well. There were enough candies, mooncakes and pomelos to go round as goodies for the residents. This is not possible without the generosity of our sponsors. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support in making this occasion a memorable one for all of us.

HDB Routine Inspections & Minor Testing Works to Void Deck/1st Storey Columns of Blk 232 and 233

It will be carried out from 3rd quarter 2010 to 4th quarter 2011 as part of the HDB pro-active maintenance programme. The inspections and minor works/testing is on a small patch of plaster on vertical columns at the void decks/1st storey of block. It should complete within 7 days. The affected residents will be informed in advance via a notice to be displayed at the notice board once the work schedules are finalised. During the period of works, staff from HDB Branch Office and technical department as well as the appointed contractor will endeavour to minimise inconvenience to the residents.

Rubbish Everywhere

I wonder if you had the same experience as me when walking in the neighborhood during the morning hours. I am always greeted with much rubbish at the lift lobbies and the void decks, on the open ground and places around the bulky item disposal bin. The rubbish bins were ransacked at times too. This rubbish and inconsiderate behaviour never stopped to come back every morning. Are we generating too much rubbish for our mother earth? Or are we just trying to create job opportunity for that cleaning lady from the Town Council? What happen to all these years of public education campaigns to keep our living environment clean? What else can we do to improve this situation?

A few days ago, someone threw a glass bottle down from Blk 224. It landed on the ground without hurting anyone, xxxx so lucky! What happened to this particular chap??? Didn't he has a rubbish chute in his house or he was just simply too lazy to reach for it?? Worst, he may be drunk!

Clean and Green SINGAPORE 2011

The National Environment Agency (NEA) and North East Community Development Council (NE CDC) are co-hosting this event. It aims to inspire everyone to adopt a clean and green lifestyle to help make Singapore a lively and livable city by encouraging community ownership to keep Singapore clean and beautiful. Highlights of the 2-day carnival:

1. Sustainable Singapore Blueprint Exhibition
2. Keep Singapore Beautiful Movement
3. Community Green Bazaar

The carnival promises an exciting line-up of interactive games, performances, lucky draws and fringe activities with collaterals/mementos to be given out from activity booths.

Our RC will provide free transportation (on 7 Nov only at 9am) to our residents who are keen to visit the carnival. Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP) for Blk 221, 222, 229 to 235 and The Final Statement of Special Polls Dated Friday, October 1, 2010

We had more than 75% of the eligible residents voted in favour of the LUP for Blk 221,222,229 to 235. This means the project can now go ahead. Congratulations to all! The HDB plans to start the upgrading works in the 2nd quarter of 2011 and it is expected to complete by the 1st quarter of 2014. Residents are advised to bear with the inconvenience during this period of lift upgrading as we look forward to new lifts that stop at every floor with hidden cameras fitted to enhance our safety and security.

National Day Observance Ceremony

Unlike the previous practice of holding the ceremony in a school multi-purpose hall, the 45th National Day cerebration was held at the crowded Kebun Baru Mall this year. Together with our Adviser, Mr. Inderjit Singh and many senior grassroots leaders, we started the day by doing some warm-up exercises followed by a short distance jog. The flag raising/ pledge taking ceremony was conducted despite the light rain. In his speech, Mr. Inderjit Singh gave thanks to everyone for their unwavering support during his past 15 years as Member of Parliament for Kebun Baru Constituency. He then announced and congratualted this year National Day Award recipients (from our zone) as well as the impending change of grassroots leadership at all levels to continue the good work of serving our residents. Mr. Inderjit Singh also presented the long service awards to some of our grassroots leaders. There were many spectacular performances put up by Ang Mo Kio Primary School, Palm View Senior Citizens' Club and Spring Residents' Committee. Our residents were given treats such as pop corns, candy floss, breads, New Water and the $3 food coupons which they used to purchase meals at nearby Food Centers. We thanked all for your patriotism and enthusiasm shown in coming together to commenmorate our nation's 45th birthday!

New Citizens Celebrate National Day

Our new citizens with young children participated in a "Recycling" project organised by the Central Singapore District to commemorate the Earth Day. This is a fringe event of the National Day celebration held at Bishan. A total of 3 families (from Blk 226, 233 and 235) came together to make a National Flag out of recycle items such as plastic bags, cotton wool, styrofoams, cardboards, egg trays etc. Our Integration and Neutralisation Sub-Committee members, Mr Kenny Chew (4th from left) and Mdm Devi (3rd from right) were there to help co-ordinate the efforts.

Indiscriminate Bicycle Parking

There are many bicycles parked indiscriminately in common areas. They caused inconvenience to residents as these bicycles tend to obstruct walkways and public seating facilities. They are unsightly to the surroundings as well. We strongly urge the owners of these bicycles to park them at the assigned parking areas.

Ministerial Community Visit

The miniterial visit went smoothly without a hitch; even the slight rain did not dampen the mood of our residents and volunteers. The residents were very enthusiastic about meeting the Minister which had been a great success for us. The Indian musical group, Malay Kompang and Lion/Dragon dance troop provided a roaring multi-racial welcome for the Minister while the pompom-carrying children put smiles on faces with their innocent looks and adorable cheers.

Many people gathered around the performing area to watch the various performances. Two of those we want to specify on are the Myanmar traditional dance by a new citizen which taught us her native country’s culture and the Wushu that showed ferocity and strength, and raised the interest of the crowd. The booths put up by the E2C, SPF,LTA, SCDF, WDA and NTUC Learning Hub taught life skills and handed out souvenirs generously. The candy floss, sculpture balloons and the Wii games attracted both children and adults alike!

We like to thank the residents for supporting us and taking interest in this event. Without your help and your enthusiasm, this visit could never have been such a wonderful success.

Unserviceable Bicycles

Some bicycles parked at the void deck are unserviceable (with missing parts) and they seemed to have left unattended for a long period of time. We prefer to give our limited parking lots to regular bicycle users therefore we strongly advise the owners to remove these unserviceable bicycles

The Residents' Committee (also known as RC) was formed on 1st July 1978. It was one of the earliest RCs being set-up in Singapore and we are now located at Blk 225 #01-567 Ang Mo Kio Ave 1. We take care of Block No. 221 to 235 which includes the Kebun Baru Mall consisting a few blocks of shop houses, a wet market and 2 food centers. Our role is to promote good citizenship, neighbourliness, harmony and cohesiveness among our residents. We also make recommendations to governmental authorities through the Peoples' Association on the needs and aspirations of our residents as well as to disseminate information to residents and gather/channel feedbacks from residents on government policies. In addition, we liaise with the various agencies such as the Town Council, HDB and NEA on issues pertaining to property maintenance and environmental hygiene/cleanliness while working closely with the Police to enhance the safety and security throughout our zone.

The Senior Citizens’ Club (also known as SCC) located at Blk 231 #01-1242 is a sub-committee organized under the purview of the RC. The SCC spearheads activities for our senior residents to promote healthy living and active ageing.

The committee members of both RC and SCC are made up of volunteers from different races, age groups and walks of life. Their passion and desire to serve our community in whatever capacity are most admired and appreciated. We therefore wish to invite more residents from Blk 221 to 235 to join us as Block Representatives or Paticipating members to experience volunteerism and sebsequently becoming our committee members when you are ready to contribute more time. Together we can better advance the goals and objectives of the RC to pursuing a more vibrant and cohesive community so as to relive the kampung spirit we used to know. A Health Screening for our residents age 50 and above was successfully conducted at the Senior Citizens' Club premises. They were briefed on their test results and told to seek medical advice on their existing conditions. We also encouraged them to exercise regularly, make more friends to stay mentally healthy and to be selective with their diet.
